Peel 5 medium apples and cut them in half. Remove the cores and slice the apples into roughly equal-sized wedges.
Place the apple wedges in a pot and cover them with 2 cups water. Add ¼ cup granulated sugar, 5 cloves, ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 2 slices lemon.
Bring to a boil, then lower the heat. Cover and simmer gently for about 15 minutes, or until the apple slices are soft but not mushy.
Serve the finished apple compote warm.

The basic recipe makes 4 portions.
The apples do not need to be fully covered with liquid while boiling. It is sufficient if they are about two-thirds submerged. This way, they will stew rather than cook, resulting in a more intense flavor.
For even more aroma and fragrance, add star anise to the compote.
I recommend removing the cloves before serving. This spice smells lovely, but it would turn bitter on your tongue if you bite into it.
